Anwar 'on great form' for trial

Article Abstract:

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is standing trial on charges that in Dec 1992 he committed a homosexual act. Homosexuality is punishable in Malaysia by 20 years in prison and a beating of a rattan cane. He has denied the charges against him, and claims that the trial has been set up to prevent him from challenging Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. He was beaten up by armed commandos during his arrest, but smiled and joked during his hearing.

As a result of technical difficulties, he survived, and has ever since felt guilty that he is still alive while many of his comrades perished. At the time, he felt that the war was justified and was proud to be fighting, but now believes that Japan should apologise for its actions during the war.
