Apple Computer's biggest mistake - and what might have been

Article Abstract:

It has come to light that Apple Computer rejected an approach from Bill Gates of Microsoft in Jul 1985 which would have involved Apple licensing its operating system to any PC manufacturer and forging links with Microsoft. It is interesting to speculate about why Apple turned down this offer and what may have happened to Apple if it had taken up the offer. It is possible that going ahead with the deal would have eventually led to the merger of Apple and Microsoft. Turning down the deal allowed Microsoft to establish a dominant market position.

Hi, this is Bill: gimme a bite of your Apple

Article Abstract:

Microsoft has acquired non-voting stock in Apple Computer worth $150 million. The two companies are traditional rivals and their products have been incompatible with each other. Apple has been seen as strong on ideas, but Microsoft is especially concerned about antitrust measures and the alliance between the two companies means that Microsoft is less likely to be a target. Without the alliance there could be calls for Microsoft to be broken up due to its monopoly power.
