Architect's brownfield of dreams

Article Abstract:

Architect John Hart took a very imaginative approach when designing a house for himself on a strangely shaped plot on the River Cam in Cambridge, England. This house, which links a Japanese feel with elements of English medieval buildings, obtained one of the Royal Institute of Architects' Architects Awards in Sep 1998. It occupies only 80 sq mt, and therefore has very few interior walls. However, Japanese-style screens and room dividers ensure that it feels cosy.

UK: PROPERTY PRICE RISES SLOW TO 6% A YEAR

Article Abstract:

The housing market is likely to stabilise in the next two years. The price of a home will rise on average by 6% in 2001 and 2002 after a boom in the summer, which saw prices rocket 20%. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors expects the market to settle. With inflation remaining at 2-2.5%, annual price rises of 6% mean homeowners will see moderate growth. The Council of Mortgage Lenders predicts rises of 6% in 2001 and 5% in 2002/3.

UK: LONDON HOUSE PRICES FORCE UP PAY

Article Abstract:

According to Incomes Data Services, a wide range of employers, from the Metropolitan Police to the department store Harrods, are being forced by the high house prices and rents in London to increase the salaries of their employees by up to 34%. An increase in pay across the public sector would cause concern to interest rate-setters at the Bank of England because it may increase inflation.
