How Brown has taken from the rich to give to the poor

Article Abstract:

The measures contained in UK Chancellor Gordon Brown's 1998 Budget will serve to redistribute income in favour of the poor. It shows a significant change in direction for benefit and tax policies. Brown is keen to show that being in employment can be financially viable for those on low wages, and this is reflected in adjustments to the National Insurance system. In the longer term, he may consider integrating National Insurance and income tax.

As a high-earning mother, I expected to feel betrayed. Instead, I'm euphoric

Article Abstract:

The fact that UK Chancellor Gordon Brown has abolished the married couples' tax allowance in his 1999 Budget is to be welcomed. This move will not prove a disincentive to marriage, as there are still many other financial advantages associated with being married. Furthermore, offering a tax advantage of this kind only to married couples was insulting to those who choose or are forced to have other domestic arrangements. The new children's tax credit is much better than the married couples' allowance, and the fact that it will taper away for high-earning families is to be welcomed.
