As the missiles land, the credibility of Nato is at stake

Article Abstract:

Nato has implemented air strikes against the Serbs without really knowing what the outcome will be. President Slobodan Milosevic appears to assume that Nato will at least decide to halt the bombing temporarily, especially as it does not really want independence for Kosovo, Yugoslavia. A temporary halt would give Milosevic the change to call on Russia to reopen negotiations with other members of the Contact Group. He would aim to arrange a peacekeeping force with a large Russian role and a political settlement much more acceptable to Serbia than that which Nato is attempting to impose. This conflict will be a significant test of Nato's credibility.

Fifty days of war. The bombing and the rhetoric go on. But still there is no end in sight to Kosovo's trail of misery

Article Abstract:

Ethnic Albanians continue to flee Kosovo, Yugoslavia, even though Nato claims that Serbia is now beaten and that Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic's military power has been severely damaged. It is now becoming clear that the 750,000 exiled Kosovars will not be able to return home before winter, being forced to remain in refugee camps in Albania and Macedonia that are already causing considerable political instability for these countries. Public opinion in western Europe is now turning against Nato military action against Yugoslavia.
