Why the crying has to stop

Article Abstract:

Interest has lessened in Diana, Princess of Wales, two years after her death. It is natural that memories and perceptions of Diana should have a calmer tone. Diana was used by different movements for their own ends, and she was even taken to symbolize meritocracy, though she had lived in privilege. The myth that Britain became more caring as a result of identification with Diana has been proven false. Victims tend to be part of the mainstream, while other deserving groups may be excluded. Genuine charity is demanding, in comparison with sentimentality.

Mr Woodhead's crass comment exposes an education system at war

Article Abstract:

UK Chief Inspector of Schools Chris Woodhead's comment that relationships between teachers and pupils can be experiential and educative has attracted considerable controversy. He was placed in a very difficult position when questioned on this issue, as he had a liaison with a former female pupil some time ago. It is likely that there will now be a concerted effort to bring about Woodhead's dismissal, but it is important to be aware that the overlap between professional responsibility and sexual attraction must be addressed with great caution.

The day that the Stasi attempted to recruit me

Article Abstract:

There is considerable uncertainty surrounding the guidelines for investigating and prosecuting breaches of national security in the UK. MI5 Director General Stephen Lander and MI6 Director General David Spedding have chosen to use proxies to present the official policy on what the intelligence service can and cannot do. This is a misguided approach. However, the publication of security service files brought out of the former Soviet Union may serve to enhance the cause of greater accountability.
