Why grocers must learn to spin plates

Article Abstract:

Leading supermarket retailers in the UK must operate in an extremely competitive environment, according to Walter Goldsmith and David Clutterbuck, who have recently published a book about successful companies. They focus on J Sainsbury, which became complacent when it was the top supermarket retailer and is now facing strong competition from other chains. The experience of this company indicates that successful companies can never afford to relax. This is especially true in retailing, where new products are being launched all the time.

Dowdy Sainsbury to rebuild image

Article Abstract:

Sainsbury is a United Kingdom supermarket chain which is seeking to modernise its image. The company plans to introduce new colors for its logo, have more staff in the supermarket floor, and cut queueing times. Sainsbury has lost market share, and holds a 14.4% stake in the UK market. A rival, Tesco, has benefited from a perception that its quality has improved, and that its prices are lower than those of Sainsbury. Asda is another competitor which has performed well.

Sex with your sun-dried tomatoes, sir?

Article Abstract:

A Budgens supermarket in north London, England, has been forced to abandon an experiment with 24-hour opening because it found that prostitutes were using the store in the early hours of the morning to seek business. Staff believe that some prostitutes were offering their services in return for a basket of groceries. Other supermarkets opening throughout the night have experienced recurrent problems with drunks and thieves.
