Lords attack on 'rushed' terror Bill

Article Abstract:

Members of the UK House of Lords have given broad support to the government's Criminal Justice (Terrorism and Conspiracy) Bill. However, they have expressed concerns about the lack of parliamentary time set aside for debating this legislation. Under the Bill, it will become easier to make prosecutions for membership of illegal terrorist organizations, and UK-based groups that conspire to commit offences abroad will be prohibited. Peers fear that the legislation could go against the European Convention on Human Rights.

Parents, not schools, must teach their children to read

Article Abstract:

Reading is more popular in the UK than ever before. However, it is mainly older people who read, while children prefer computer games, television programmes and picture-based comics. This trend gives cause for concern about reading levels in the future. The best approach to dealing with this problem would be for the government to change the tax and benefit laws to permit parents to spend more time with their pre-school children, thus ensuring that they can read before they start school.
