Case for defence

Article Abstract:

It is common for lawyers to be challenged over acting for very unpopular people, such as those accused of murder. Some lawyers feel that they should take on any case, while others admit to having turned away those they would feel unhappy representing. Defence lawyers place strong emphasis on the fact that they are merely part of the legal process, and do not feel that they should be held solely responsible for a criminal's fate. Everybody should be concerned about the danger of defendants coming to court without legal representation.

Outlawing local justice

Article Abstract:

The closure of the UK's old magistrates' courts threatens to have a negative impact on links between magistrates and the local community they serve. In many cases, old magistrates' courts have fallen into disrepair, and the cost of repairing them cannot be justified. Furthermore, the workload of magistrates is declining as the police use cautions more frequently and more offences are settled by post. Smaller courts are being replaced with a smaller number of larger buildings with improved facilities.

In defence of the jury system

Article Abstract:

Some observers in the UK believe that the jury system has become discredited and that it should be abandoned. However, others believe that the jury system continues to serve a useful purpose. Journalist Trevor Grove, who supports the jury system, has recommended a number of changes. These include allowing people to volunteer for jury service, giving judges more guidance before a case starts and ensuring that more middle-class people serve on juries.
