At last, a new symphony with tunes you can hum

Article Abstract:

It has been widely believed for many years that the surviving material for Sir Edward Elgar's final symphony is a sad reflection of the fact that his powers declined as he reached the end of his life. However, this view is challenged by Anthony Payne's elaboration of the sketches for Elgar's Third Symphony. This music contains extremely attractive tunes and striking motifs, and all four movements present a great deal of memorable music. It is impossible to distinguish between Elgar's original music and the additions made by Payne.

The great Proms experiment

Article Abstract:

The 1995 Promenade concert season will include the work of 36 living composers, more modern music than has ever been included in a single season in living memory. Modern music is no longer necessarily non-tonal, and the works which are to be performed are in fact very varied. The work of some composers, such as Arvo Part and John Tavener, has a great harmonic simplicity, while that of composers such as Kaija Saariaho and James Wood is extremely experimental.

In praise of the back-seat driver

Article Abstract:

Conductor Pierre Boulez has recently held a masterclass in celebration of his 70th birthday. He makes the art of conducting appear extremely simple, and has a very relaxed approach. The three students who took part in the masterclass were clearly not at all relaxed, but made a brave attempt to deal with very challenging pieces. To observers, it seemed that other conductors will never really be able to feel at ease with Boulez's approach.
