A godly man working with Mammon

Article Abstract:

The world of finance is not necessarily incompatible with Christian beliefs, according to Young Accountant of the Year Mark Garratt, who is also a senior elder with the Salvation Army. He won the award after playing a central role in the management buyout of the company now known as Interior from Stanhope when the latter concern was purchased by British Land. He has encouraged Stanhope to set a standard for prompt payment, and this has led to a strong rise in repeat business.

We wish you were here

Article Abstract:

Absenteeism is still a considerable problem in the UK, even though the business culture of the 1990s requires staff to be much more committed to their work than in the past. Managers and supervisors need to tackle absenteeism promptly and firmly, thus encouraging staff to attend work regularly and work together effectively. Line managers will bear the main responsibility for dealing with this problem, although human resources departments can also play a role.

Temporary staff here to stay

Article Abstract:

Accountancy firms choose to employ temporary staff to cover specific needs orpeak periods. They analyse skills and work demands to find which tasks are suitable for permanent or temporary staff. A survey by financial recruitment consultants Robert Half and Accountemps found that nearly half the temporary staff are part-qualified. The provision of benefits is lower, but the core workforce is unlikely to be made redundant.
