Singles night at the Norfolk Arms

Article Abstract:

Mr Larry Foster owns 14,200 hit 'singles' as a working collection for his job as pop music quizmaster in public houses and hotels. His colleague John Kutner owns 13,585. They bought them cheaply from collectors' fairs and junk shops. Each works at 12 venues a week. It takes about four hours to work out an evening's quiz. Fans travel up to 20 miles to participate. Some of the questions are about rare items and cause abuse. Mr Foster was previously a bus driver, postman and London Union of Youth Clubs' DJ of the Year 1976. John Kutner was Guinness's top DJ in 1984.

A new English variety of apple

Article Abstract:

London silversmith J A Campbell makes spun silver apples for the New York jeweller Tiffany. Flat silver discs are shaped with hand tools while spinning on a lathe. Technology and craftsmanship are mixed as stamping would be too expensive. Pieces are usually marked with the retailer's name rather than the maker's name. Neil Curd, bound apprentice silver spinner to Mr Campbell, will qualify in five years. When the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths qualifies him he will beome a freeman of the Company and of the City of London.

I've the watch if you've the time

Article Abstract:

People considering buying second-hand wristwatches should look for names whose craftmanship is likely to become increasingly respected and valued. Top names include Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet. Many dealers regard Movado as undervalued, while Rolex is seen as not being value for money. It is worth looking for watches at house sales and other non-specialist auctions, where there are fewer dealers.
