BBC crisis puts freeze-frame on commissions

Article Abstract:

BBC1 and BB2 controllers are assessing how they can deal with the decision by BBC Television managers to place a freeze on programme commissions. Senior producers have reacted angrily to the moratorium, claiming that it is simply an attempt to force the channel controllers to broadcast stockpiled programmes. The freeze results from a commitment made by the BBC to eliminate borrowing by 1996-97.

Beneath the paper mountain a revolution is rumbling

Article Abstract:

The BBC is reviewing its charter in preparation for defending the licence fee. A campaign seeks support from influential groups. The method of making and producing programmes is changing to producer choice. Accountancy firms divide the organisation into business units which price their services. This reduces creativity through the loss of strong collective support from proper departments.

BBC-bashing: a modern ritual

Article Abstract:

The Conservative government has resorted to criticising the BBC for political bias because it is in a very precarious position. Attacking broadcasters is designed to deflect some attention from these problems. This attack is not nearly as vicious as those undertaken by previous administrations, and is simply part of the ritual of modern political life.
