When treasure becomes a burden

Article Abstract:

It has become increasingly common in the UK for museum directors and trustees to honour the terms of a bequest. In many cases, conditions have changed so much that certain terms of a bequest may now be completely irrelevant. However, it is possible that directors and trustees would be breaking the law by ignoring these terms. Furthermore, people may be discouraged from making bequests to museums if they feel that their wishes will not be respected.

As I was going down to St Ives

Article Abstract:

The Tate art gallery in St Ives, England, which celebrates its fifth anniversary in Jun 1998, is strongly committed to community involvement. The gallery will only display the work of artists who have lived, worked or formed a relationship with the area. This approach appears restrictive, but has actually been very successful. It was estimated that the gallery would attract 70,000 visitors a year, but it has in fact attracted 186,000 a year.
