Banking on the value of sterling

Article Abstract:

The value of money in foreign currency accounts held by UK investors has fallen in value by up to 25% since the beginning of 1996 as a result of the unexpected strength of sterling against a range of traditional 'hard' currencies. This trend is likely to continue for some time, but it is likely that investors will eventually begin to make a profit on funds held in a bank account in foreign currency again. It will generally be necessary to invest at least the equivalent of around $3,000 to avoid charges on a foreign currency account.

How insurers invested your funds

Article Abstract:

The investment performance of fund managers has traditionally been shrouded in secrecy. However, consumers now have access to track records detailing which funds have given the best returns over a specific period of time, and more emphasis is now being placed on forecasting fund performance. These details are likely to have a signficant impact on levels of charges, with funds which make the highest charges being forced to justify these on the basis of performance figures.

Flow chart: 2. spend on your life

Article Abstract:

Term assurance, the cheapest form of life assurance, is currently enjoying a revival. It is inexpensive because policies pay out only if the insured dies and pay nothing at all if the insured lives beyond the chosen term of the policy. These policies pay out a lump sum which is usually around five times the policyholder's annual income. Other forms of life assurance include a family income benefit or family income policy and a whole of life policy.
