Baring finds the Midas touch

Article Abstract:

The price of old Etonian Julian Baring's unit trust, the Mercury Asset Management Gold and General Fund doubled in 1993. It was the best performing fund of the month in Feb, Mar and Apr 1993. Many investors were put off by the falling dollar price of gold, but it was rising in South Africa due to the poor state of the rand. In rand terms the gold price rose 18%. Baring invested in South African mines, while other gold funds spread their money round the world. Baring, 57, worked for the South African Anglo-American mining group for eight years from 1956.

Financial services make the new at Reuters

Article Abstract:

Reuters, formerly known as an international news agency, has expanded its financial services operations considerably. News services now make up a fraction of its revenue. It lost the subscription of the prestigious 'Daily Telegraph' who decided to opt for a less expensive French news service. Reuters' traditional customers feel it no longer cares about them as do some of its older journalists who have left the company. Reuters defends its policy claiming it needs financial services ventures to make a profit.
