Bean counters make way for button pushers

Article Abstract:

The implementation of the single European currency is likely to bring commercial consolidation in the UK. This will in turn increase demand for information technology (IT) graduates, especially in the financial services and retail sectors, where companies will move into new regions. IT graduates able to programme in languages Visual Basic, C++ and Delphi will be in particular demand, as will those familiar with databases and able to develop intranets. Senior management positions may eventually be open to graduates who can offer both IT skills and other professional qualifications.

Larger investment banks could be prepared to offer a promising graduate a starting salary of 25,000 pounds sterling, while the average salary for a graduate entering the finance sector in the City of London will be around 20,000 pounds sterling. There is particular demand for graduates in maths or science from Oxford or Cambridge University or one of the older universities.
