Beef crisis infected with a bad case of soundbite disease

Article Abstract:

Progress is gradually being made towards a settlement of the conflict between France and the UK over the French ban on imports of beef from the UK. However, agreement has not yet been reached on the French demand that all UK beef exports should be traceable to their farm and animal of origin. The French government is clearly trying to gain time in order to get as much as it can from the negotiations, but this does not mean that it is willing to risk being taken to court.

Boycott? No, we're happily shopping with 'the enemy.'

Article Abstract:

Many Britons continue to shop at the Cite Europe shopping mall in Calais, France, despite hostility in UK newspapers towards France because of the French ban on imports of beef from the UK. Some of the Britons shopping in Calais feel that it is wrong for France to ban UK beef, but they continue to be attracted by the lower prices in France. There is a pleasant atmosphere at the shopping mall, with no hostility between French retailers and British customers.
