Byers' enterprise initiatives come under attack

Article Abstract:

UK Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Stephen Byers has announced five new schemes designed to assist expanding, high-technology businesses. They include a new UK high-technology fund and plans for the country's first 'knowledge bank.' Some observers believe that there are now too many government enterprise initiatives, and claim that business may become confused about what is available. Prospective entrepreneurs have criticized the Capital Gains Tax reforms, intended to encourage long-term investment in small companies.

Prescott backs new railway in Snowdonia

Article Abstract:

UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has stated that he is in favour of approving plans to reconstruct the 25-mile Welsh Highland Railway, which runs from Porthmadog, Wales, to Dinas, near Caernarvon, Wales. However, a final decision will not be made until Ffestiniog Mountain Railway can prove that there would be no danger to passengers from rock falls. Opponents of the scheme feel that it will have a negative impact on Snowdonia National Park.
