Bernard's bolthole

Article Abstract:

The Berlin Philharmonic orchestra played one concert in the UK in 1993 yet it was sold out, an almost unknown phenomenon. There were two reasons for this, first the concert took place at 10.30 in the morning in order to fit in with plans to broadcast it live to Japan and, second, the orchestra wanted to make it a promenade concert and standing soon afer breakfast discouraged an audience. Bernard Haitink, a favourite of this orchestra and now music director at the Royal Opera House (ROH), conducted and he said the low prices of the seats, top price 30 pounds sterling, pleased him. The top price of over 100 pounds sterling at the ROH has led to arguments between him and the board there.

Children's fiction finds a new hero in Just William's long-lost chum

Article Abstract:

Macmillan is to shortly republish stories by Richmal Crompton, most well known as the author of the popular 'Just William' series of children's books. These stories appeared in the Star newspaper in the late 1940s, and were published in book form in 1949 and 1951, but then went out of print. Macmillan feels that the continuing popularity of the 'Just William' books will make these stories, featuring a seven-year-old boy named Jimmy, popular too.

'Mona Lisa' just one of the world's greatest paintings that fails to make it into top 100

Article Abstract:

The Folio Society's 'Book of the 100 Greatest Paintings' does not include some extremely well-known works, including Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers' and Leonardo da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa.' The organization feels that some paintings have become over-exposed and cliched, and has deliberately avoided these.
