Germany learns to love its bothersome poet

Article Abstract:

Germans have always had very mixed views about poet Heinrich Heine, who loved Germany greatly but could not bear to live there. However, there have been many events in Dec 1997 marking the 200th anniversary of his birth. His home town of Dusseldorf, Germany, has finally begun to take pride in its associations with him, and has even gone as far as to name its university after him. German President Roman Herzog has praised Heine's very critical mind, and has called on modern intellectuals to follow his example.

New generation takes root in the cursed soil

Article Abstract:

Very few of the 10,200 Jews now living in Berlin, Germany, are genuine 'German Jews,' as this group was almost completely eliminated during the Nazi era. They are mainly fourth-generation atheists, having come to the city from Slav countries. There are still some vestiges of anti-Semitism, but Jews are generally reasonably well accepted by Germans. Indeed, the Jews of Germany have on some occasions been prompted to defend Germany, especially when today's Germans are associated with the crimes of the past.
