At home with the sleepover generation

Article Abstract:

Some UK boarding schools are now offering occasional boarding facilities for day pupils. This service is extremely useful for working parents who may need to work late sometimes or even work away from home for a short period. Schools now recognize that family life can be very complicated, and are prepared to be flexible, adapting to last-minute changes in arrangements. The Independent School Information Service estimates that in 1997 13,000 flexi-boarding pupils spent a total of 95,000 nights in schools.

Preparing our children for the worst

Article Abstract:

The recent murders of three children have highlighted parents' concerns about allowing children to go out alone or in groups. Parents must balance their concerns about their child's safety against the need to allow the child a certain degree of freedom, and this can sometimes be very hard. There have always been people around who may pose a danger to children, but media coverage has made this problem seem more acute, and many children now live in areas where they do not know their neighbours.
