Men should be what they seem

Article Abstract:

Considerable cultural significance can be attached to William Henry Ireland's play 'Vortigern.' This play, which Ireland claimed was a lost work by Shakespeare, deceived many eminent people until just before it was due to open in Apr 1796. It can be regarded as an important link in a chain of artistic fakes which stretches to the present day. Forgery offers a significant insight into the society within which it is produced.

That Shakespeare: what a character

Article Abstract:

The forthcoming revival of Edward Bond's 'Bingo' at the Young Vic will be the latest attempt to portray Shakespeare the man, as opposed to his plays, in dramatic form. There are few firm facts about his life, so playwrights have had to make many assumptions, and approaches have varied greatly. In Bond's play, Shakespeare is portrayed as a symbol of insulated genius.

The year they invented Shakespeare

Article Abstract:

It is important not to admire all of Shakespeare's work without question, according to writer Peter Barnes, who has written 'Jubilee,' a play about actor David Garrick's Stratford Jubilee of 1769. He feels that the Jubilee was a backwards step, even though he admires Garrick.
