Beyond the lure of off-the-shelf ethics

Article Abstract:

Society in the mid-1990s is characterised by a strong sense of insecurity, covering issues ranging from employment to crime and public values. This feeling has been picked up by politicians, who are now starting to use it to their political advantage. Politicians from all parties are now emphasising a revival of community values, moving away from the individualism which characterised the 1980s. Insecurity seems to have prompted a desperate search for a new sense of community or cohesion which can bring people together.

Myth of withering government

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that globalisation will damage national sovereignty and the power of governments. Even left-wingers now claim that government has almost no room for manoeuvre any more, and some right-wingers see global forces as destroying the foundations of government. However, such attitudes are misguided, especially as they do not take account of the extent to which the world is now much more governed and regulated than it has ever been in the past.

Between Waterworld and Judge Dredd

Article Abstract:

The traditional view of the UK as an ordered, peaceful society is gradually disappearing. There are no longer any clear rules about how people should behave in various situations, and the sense of social order is constantly being eroded by political and business scandals. Alarming international developments also add to the sense that the world is becoming out of control.
