Why small may be best for the Square Mile

Article Abstract:

London's banks and securities companies should remain within the City of London, rather than moving out to the Docklands area, according to Michael Cassidy, chairman of the City's policy and resources committee. He justifies his argument by giving the example of New York, where the financial services industry has become dispersed and has lost the benefits of concentration. He believes that it is still important to be able to visit many clients and colleagues quickly, even against the background of the growing use of electronic dealing.

Article Abstract:

The UK government's new environment agency must deal with some very sensitive issues, according to Ed Gallagher, who is head of the agency. It must attempt to strike a balance between those who believe that all environmental regulation has a negative impact on the UK's competitiveness and those who feel that environmental protection must be given the highest priority. It is likely that the agency will act more quickly than some businesses would like but more slowly than environmental groups would like.

Drug wars go global

Article Abstract:

Pharmaceutical concern Glaxo has enjoyed great success over recent years, mainly through Zantac, its ulcer treatment drug. It is now the most valuable company on the London stock exchange, and has sales of 5.6 billion pounds sterling. However, its rapid expansion may soon start to slow down as the market for drugs and healthcare changes. It is for this reason that it hopes to purchase Wellcome, which will allow it to considerably extend its product range.
