Trouble for that nice Dr Carey

Article Abstract:

Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey has admirable qualities but many people doubt whether they are right ones for the job. He has not dealt with the problems arising from the issue of women priests, increasing interest in spiritual subjects, or financial difficulties in the Church. Political experience, personal authority and intellect would be more useful. Enquiries about the ordination of women are passed to the Archbishop of York, Dr John Habgood. Dr Carey wishes to present himself as an ordinary Christian, but has difficulty expressing himself clearly.

All gas and gaiters as Runcie has them feuding in the aisles

Article Abstract:

A new biography of Lord Runcie, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, highlights his characteristic mixture of respect for institutions and disregard for traditions. The book, written by Humphrey Carpenter, deals with Lord Runcie's views on a wide range of issues, including the ordination of women and homosexuality within the Church of England. There has been particular conflict with the Archdeacon of York, the Ven George Austin, over Lord Runcie's apparent connivance at sexual immorality in a theological college.

Archbishop who turned hatred into grace

Article Abstract:

Lord Habgood, who has recently retired as Archbishop of York, is highly respected, even by those who do not share his view that women should be allowed to become priests. He has argued strongly that the church establishment is still relevant to modern society, and seems to represent an age when the Church of England was much more self-confident. He is keen to emphasise that the Christian faith is about very straightforward issues.
