The real problem with capitalism is the markets

Article Abstract:

The history of the 20th century has been determined by many conflicting ideologies. Of these, only capitalism remains, although it exists in many different forms. Capitalist civilization is characterized by many stresses and strains, but economic instability, rather than these stresses and strains, has been responsible for a flight from the market. It is true that governments make many mistakes, but financial markets can also be misguided. In particular, they show a herd instinct, with a flight of financial assets from one market often spreading across the whole system.

Philosophers can't teach us morals

Article Abstract:

Intellectuals have always been good at analysing problems without being able to provide solutions and this is well illustrated in recent discussions about the moral decline that has overtaken Britain from the Royal family down to the unmarried mother and the joyriding hooligan. If changes in the country's morality happens it will come from the bottom, not the top. The loss of religious belief and family values is not due to economic causes as Japan has maintained morality with its new affluence.

An end to state-assisted idleness

Article Abstract:

A policy to reduce unemployment, rather than paying benefits for people to do nothing, is being considered. There will be about half a million long-term unemployed even after recovery. Training and employment guarantees would reinstate the long-term unemployed into the labour market. Payment for regular attendance and benefits conditional on attending training schemes work would save the government money. The government should buy training customised to employers' needs from the private sector.
