Bibi Netanyahu's failed bid to emulate King Claudius

Article Abstract:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a serious error of judgement when he ordered Mossad, the country's foreign intelligence service, to assassinate Khalid Meshal, a Hamas leader, by injecting a slow acting poison. The Mossad agents were detained by Meshal's bodyguard, and Netanyahu was obliged to send an antidote in order to avoid a potentially very sensitive situation. Even if successful, the assassination attempt would not have really benefited Israeli very much. All Israel achieved was to alienate King Hussein, Netanyahu's most important ally in the Arab world.

Netanyahu accused over Jerusalem homes pledge

Article Abstract:

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has responded to criticism of plans to construct 6,500 apartments for Jews at Har Homa, situated between Bethlehem and Jerusalem, by promising that his government will allocate $42 million for housing for Palestinians in 10 areas of East Jerusalem. This promise has been criticised by human rights groups, which claim that it is extremely misleading, if not an outright lie. They point out that the Israeli government has not delivered on promises of building permits for Palestinians in the past.

Can Bibi beat the suicide bombers?

Article Abstract:

Israeli opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu ('Bibi') has taken a very moderate line over recent months, and it now seems increasingly likely that he could become prime minister shortly. Recent suicide bombings have damaged the reputation of Labour prime minister Shimon Peres, and some observers believe that he could now lose the forthcoming elections. Netanyahu has been particularly successful in playing on voters' fears, and has claimed to be able to deliver 'peace with security.'
