Tories hang on for May after vote ambush

Article Abstract:

UK prime minister John Major has stated clearly that he is prepared to delay holding a general election until May 01, 1997, the latest date on which the Conservative party would be allowed to hold the election. This would be possible as long as the government were not defeated on a vote of confidence. The Conservatives experienced an embarrassing one-vote defeat in the Commons on their Education Bill, but this will not in itself be sufficient to bring about a vote of confidence.

Vote widens the divisions on Conservative benches

Article Abstract:

The Conservative party was uncertain until the very last minute whether it would gain enough support to win the recent vote on European policy. Former chancellor Norman Lamont voted with the Labour party, which was unexpected, but more concern has been caused by the fact that the nine official Ulster Unionists failed to support the government. However, some of the whipless Conservative MPs voted with the government, thus increasing their chances of regaining the whip.

I'll use the Euro veto, says Blair

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party will if necessary allow the UK to be isolated from the rest of the European Union in order to protect British interests, according to party leader Tony Blair. A future Labour government would be prepared to use the national veto on issues including immigration, taxation and border controls. Blair has stressed that prime minister John Major is weak in Europe because the government is divided.
