Bibi flounders in sea of troubles after Hamas fiasco

Article Abstract:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been placed in a very difficult position following the failure of an attempt by Mossad, the Israeli foreign intelligence service, to assassinate Khalid Meshal, the head of the political bureau of Hamas. It is reported that King Hussein of Jordan has responded by threatening to sever diplomatic relations with Israel. Israel sought to re-establish links with King Hussein by releasing Sheikh Yassin, the spiritual leader and founder of Hamas. However, this caused further tension in its policy towards Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

Hamas chief says revenge attacks are the only defence

Article Abstract:

Hamas will continue to undertake suicide bomb attacks against Israel, even though Israel and the US have insisted on measures being taken to limit the organization's activities, according to Abdel Aziz Rantisi, Hamas leader in Gaza. He believes that suicide bombings are the only way of balancing out the weakness of the Palestinian people. However, he has also given veiled indications that the attacks may be scaled down, especially as conflict between Palestinians would have dire consequences.

Shadow of Hamas hangs over Gaza visit

Article Abstract:

Gaza, which is receiving a visit from UK prime minister John Major, has unique political conditions. The enthusiasm which greeted the takeover of Gaza by Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority in May 1994 has been replaced with disappointment, with ordinary Gazans having received few real benefits. Israeli settlements still cover 40% of the land, and the local economy is heavily dependent on the earnings of Palestinian labourers in Israel.
