The sounds of squeals from a Euro-snare

Article Abstract:

Labour party Tony Blair performed very well in the recent government debate on European policy, having the courage to express his commitment to a single European currency. He has criticised prime minister John Major for being unwilling to state whether he is in favour or not of a single European currency, and has used the situation to portray himself as a clear, confident leader. However, John Major could gain political advantage from emphasising that he is watching and following public opinion.

Honest John versus Tricky Tony ...

Article Abstract:

The personalities of John Major and Tony Blair will be extremely important in the campaign for the forthcoming UK general election. The Conservative party is keen to convey the impression that John Major is honest, while Tony Blair cannot be trusted. This is a crude messages, but has the potential to be very powerful, even though it cannot be backed up at all. Voters would be wise to reject any campaigning which is undertaken on the basis of personality.

Time to lose your self-control, Mr Major

Article Abstract:

Prime minister John Major has been facing increasingly strong attacks from backbench Conservative MPs, particularly over the issues raised by the Nolan recommendations on the publication of MPs' income. This problem has now reached a stage where it cannot be solved with behind-the-scenes pressure on the rebellious MPs. The prime minister must confront them directly, showing that compromise is no longer acceptable.
