Talk of peace from Israel's military dove

Article Abstract:

Yitzhak Rabin, the leader of Israel's Labour Party, hopes to regain power in the election on June 23 1992 after 15 years of Likud government. He spoke positively about the intifada and would aim for peace if elected prime minister. His military background gives him credibility in aiming to achieve peace without risking security. A Labour government would not provide a complete settlement freeze and would offer Palestinians limited autonomy for five years.

A lonely prisoner of Zion

Article Abstract:

Natan Sharansky has lived in Israel since he was freed from a Soviet labour camp as a Prisoner of Zion. He does not believe there is an analogy between the cause of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation and his cause. The refuseniks, including Yosef Mendelevich and Ida Nudel, promote universal human rights. They believe that Palestinians' rights should be disregarded in favour of Israel's supreme human right to exist. Most Israelis ignore their views.
