Big Mac at 30 no longer the burger king

Article Abstract:

Some 30 years after the first McDonald's fast food restaurant opened in California, the global fast food giant is at a turning point. US profits have been flat for three years, market share has been lost to Burger King and Wendy's, and recent promotions designed to fight back have met with limited success. The new chief executive, Michael Quinlan, plans to get back to basics and achieve growth through innovation. Eight new items, including the Big Xtra, breakfast bagels and fried chicken are currently being tested in the US, and the recent acquisition of a small chain, Chipotle Mexican grill, raises the prospect of burgers with salsa. Although these products were not in mind when the first restaurant was opened, they may help McDonalds to restore its market share, and enable it to expand in parts of the world where the yellow logo is as yet unknown.

The news deaf people have longer to hear

Article Abstract:

Helping to resolve the problems of discomfort and feedback associated with conventional hearing-aids, a new ear implant developed by Symphonics of the US is now being used for UK patients. The vibrating sound bridge is implanted in the middle ear, where it converts sound to vibrations. The sound is sent from a receiver implanted under the skin behind the ear, and connected to a microphone worn externally. The operations in the UK are part of a Europe-wide test. However, the high cost of the operation, at GB 4,000 to GB 5,000, may prevent its widespread use at present.
