Bite. Chew. Swallow. Gulp!

Article Abstract:

Film criticism in the UK has generally been polite and balanced, with critics refraining from expressing themselves with great passion either for or against a particular film. Academic film criticism has moved very much to the periphery, with most magazines now featuring reviews, rather than true criticism. However, the UK still has two major film critics: Quentin Crisp and David Thomson. Crisp always writes very politely, even about films he greatly dislikes, while Thomson is always aware of politics and money.

The real thing ... only more so

Article Abstract:

Many people take a negative view of film remakes, regarding them as an indication that the original film is either despised or underestimated. They feel that remakes are unnecessary, and fail to realize that being unnecessary is a precondition for something to be regarded as art. They believe that films do not change with time, and therefore do not need to be amended in order to secure immortality. In fact, films are not timeless, as they deteriorate physically and their cultural context inevitably changes.

Beneath the underdog

Article Abstract:

The National Film Theatre in London, England, is to stage a retrospective of the film and television work of Rainer Werner Fassbinder in Jan and Feb 1999. The season will include period pieces and television drama, along with all the films that made Fassbinder so popular among those who attended film festivals. Fassbinder supported people seen as pariahs or nonentities, but his films also contain moments of extreme delicacy. He was inspired by both Hollywood melodrama and Brechtian theatre.
