Barbarity, hatred - and hope

Article Abstract:

Many abuses of human rights still take place across the world. However, significant progress towards upholding human rights has been made in 1998. Agreement has been reached on a treaty establishing a first permanent international criminal court, and the ratification in Sep 1998 by Burkina Faso of the international treaty banning landmines means that this treaty will take effect in 1999. Justice and human rights are being increasingly promoted on a global scale, as reflected in the arrest in London, England, of former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet.

If we paid our fair share in Nato, we'd have more say

Article Abstract:

Nato faces significant challenges as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. Indeed, some observers are raising doubts about what Nato is really for and whether it is required at all, especially as it has completed its original task. Many observers regard Nato as merely an element of US imperialism, but its current structure is in fact more closely linked with a serious lack of self-confidence among European countries. Europe should increase its contributions to Nato, thus gaining the right to call for changes in the command structure.

Serbs retaliate with massacres as Nato shoots down two jets

Article Abstract:

There are reports of Serb paramilitary forces and masked irregulars attacking ethnic Albanians in western Kosovo, Yugoslavia. Three villages near the Albanian border have been razed, and there are claims that ethnic Albanian men have been massacred. Nato has increased its bombing of Yugoslav targets, and two Yugoslav MiG-29s have been shot down. Nato military action against Yugoslavia has so far apparently served only to worsen the plight of ethnic Albanians in Kosovo.
