Bittersweet memories

Article Abstract:

The essence of Prague, Czech Republic, is impossible to capture in photographs. The steeples of the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn have a golden glow when illuminated at night and epitomize the image of a fairy-tale castle. The crumbling bricks and poorly-maintained pavements of the back alleyways of Prague are romantic rather than depressing. Near to Charles Bridge over the River Vltava, which was originally built in 1357, is a floating cafe which provides excellent views of Prague Castle. New restaurants and hotels are opening on a regular basis.

I didn't want to be part of the scene I'd helped to create

Article Abstract:

Poet Brian Patten tells of the moment in 1963 when he realised that writing poetry was going to dominate his whole life. He had already come into contact with poets Roger McGough and Adrian Henri, and soon became strongly committed to writing and poetry. He only had a conventional job for a very short time, and since then has led a rather precarious existence as a poet and writer. He still tours with McGough and Henri, despite early predictions that they would only enjoy temporary fame.

Siegfried Sassoon - mad, sad or heroically confused?

Article Abstract:

There are many ambiguities associated with Siegfried Sassoon, who wrote anti-war poems but also fought heroically in the first world war. Many people are still debating about his sexuality, his attitudes and what he meant in some of his war poems. He dared to express his opposition to war at a time when many people, even those who also opposed war, thought it very dangerous to do so. However, he never dared to write about his troubled sexuality, even much later on in his life.
