Lessons for Blair from the War of Little Joe

Article Abstract:

The decision by Harriet Harman to send her son to a selective school has put Labour party leader Tony Blair in a very difficult position and has dented the party's image at a crucial time. Tony Blair has great personal authority, but this could soon wane if other episodes of this kind take place. Some voters will turn away from the party because they regard Harman's decision as hypocritical, and her attitude has already caused a split within the party.

No more seaside slapstick

Article Abstract:

Politicians are generally fairly reasonable people, but their behaviour seems to undergo a dramatic change during their annual party conference. When speaking at the conference, they become strange caricatures of their real selves, expressing extreme views and descending to cheap jokes. They are almost like cartoon characters, and say nothing of any real substance.
