Blair defends 'best chance for peace.'

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has emphasized to Northern Ireland's Unionists that they now have a much better deal than was offered during the Good Friday Agreement. He has stated that the new deal offers a guarantee of a full process of decommissioning, along with a fall-back position that protects the Unionists' interests. Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has stated that Unionists would have to sacrifice their democratic principles if Sinn Fein were included in the executive before decommissioning.

Climate of peace allows healing to begin

Article Abstract:

The mistakes of the past must be put aside if the people of the North and South of Ireland are to live together harmoniously in the future, according to the text of the Framework Document on the future of Northern Ireland. A climate of peace has already been created by recent ceasefire agreements, and this will form the basis for political progress. Attention must now be given to new political structures which can gain the support of all elected representatives in Northern Ireland.

Political institutions to shape a new era

Article Abstract:

The Framework Document on the future of Northern Ireland includes proposals for new political institutions. These include a single unicameral Assembly of around 90 members, which would be the legislature for transferred matters in Northern Ireland, a system of Assembly Committees and a separate panel to complement the working of the Assembly. This panel could be responsible for key consultative, monitoring, referral and representational tasks.
