Blair places his bet on the Thin Controller

Article Abstract:

New UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is determined that there will be tight control of policy-making and public relations in his new government. This is why he has appointed Peter Mandelson as a minister without portfolio. Mandelson will be very powerful, exerting tight central control over his ministerial colleagues. He will ensure that the new Labour government is characterized by the attention to detail, discipline and central sense of direction which ensured that it won the recent general election.

'Dear Tony, I can't believe I am writing this letter.'

Article Abstract:

UK Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Mandelson expresses the view in his letter of resignation to Prime Minister Tony Blair that he did nothing wrong or improper. However, he acknowledges that he should not have entered into an arrangement for a loan from Paymaster General Geoffrey Robinson, and apologizes for the problems that this arrangement has created. Robinson's letter of resignation to Blair emphasizes that he did not misuse his position as an MP or a minister.
