What a difference a train makes

Article Abstract:

The Docklands Light Railway has had a mixed impact on Beckton, London, England, according to Open University Senior Research Fellow in design and innovation Dr Stephen Potter. Existing residents have benefited from new job opportunities, but there have been very few work journeys to Canary Wharf and the Docklands development area. This goes against the anticipated impact of the Docklands Light Railway. The railway, which began operating in Beckton in 1996, has been more extensively used for journeys towards Stratford and other areas of the East End.

Decency can be a winner

Article Abstract:

There are benefits to society from treating people in a considerate way, according to Campaign for Courtesy Chmn Gerry Hanson. He emphasizes that being more decent to each other could improve the UK's psychiatric health, as people would feel more valued. It would also cut the number of road accidents, many of which are caused by an act of discourtesy. He wishes to take action against behaviour that shows people do not care for others and for society as a whole, such as dropping litter.
