Turning a fine art into salesmanship

Article Abstract:

The love letters of John Bratby, the artist, written to Diane Hills, will be auctioned at Sotheby's in Aug 1992. The Bratby archive, 25 boxes of letters, sold for 10,000 pounds sterling in autumn 1991 to Mr Bob Simm, a management consultant who previously bought 120 Bratby paintings and 800 drawings. Despite 16 touring exhibitions between 1987 and 1992, when Bratby died, the auction market is financially dormant.
