Blair treads softly on new currency

Article Abstract:

It is anticipated that UK Prime Minister Tony Blair will call a referendum on UK membership of the single European currency shortly after the next general election. Single European currency membership will become an increasingly sensitive political issue in the UK in 1999, but is believed unlikely that Blair will shift from the government's policy of being committed to monetary union in principle but using economic tests to decide whether to join. However, supporters of a single currency believe Blair is moving slowly towards their point of view.
