Bones of contention over Nicholas's final resting place

Article Abstract:

It is widely expected that the remains of Nicholas II, the last imperial ruler of Russia, his wife and three of his children will be placed in a chapel just inside the entrance to the Peter and Paul Cathedral on an island in the River Neva at St Petersburg, Russia. The main cathedral already contains the tombs of Catherine II, Peter the Great and other Russian rulers. However, there is still conflict over the remains of Nicholas II. In particular, city authorities in Moscow, Russia, would like to see the remains placed in the newly reconstructed Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.

Yeltsin's tennis coach, the sports fund and the general who demanded $40m

Article Abstract:

There are very few details regarding the latest political scandal in Russia, which is believed to involve embezzlement, attempted murder and blackmail. It revolves around the National Sports Foundation, which was co-founded by president Boris Yeltin's tennis coach Shamil Tarpishchev, who has recently been dismissed as sports minister. There has been speculation regarding the activities of this organisation since Dec 1993, when it was granted tax exemptions.

Back to the gulag

Article Abstract:

UK teenager Karen Henderson may face six years in a Russian penal colony for foreigners if she fails in her appeal against a conviction for drugs smuggling. The colony contains foreigners of many different nationalities, but particularly Chinese, Afghans, Mongolians and Vietnamese. The prisoners face a life of physical hardship, but find this easier to deal with than the mental torture of extreme isolation.
