Bosnian leader insists on co-existence

Article Abstract:

The Bosnian Pres Alija Izetbegovic has praised the West for the London peace conference on Aug 28 1992. However he believes that the conference did not hold much guarantees and he distrusts the Serbs promises to close concentration camps. He believes that naval and air intervention is needed and especially an air exclusion area over Bosnia. Izetbegovic opposes the idea of Bosnia being ethnically divided as the races have been intermingled for a 100 years. He claims that the Serbs will ultimately lose the war and their influence in the Balkans will decline.

East Germany's vanishing babies

Article Abstract:

East Germany has seen a dramatic fall in its birth rate since the collapse of the Berlin Wall in Nov 1989. This is mainly because life has become much more uncertain than it was under Communism. Unemployment has affected women particularly badly, and many are experiencing financial difficulties. Comprehensive child care is no longer available, and women feel that society is now very 'child-unfriendly.'

East Slavonia braces for the final battle

Article Abstract:

East Slavonia has traditionally been Croat territory, but has been under the control of the Serbs since autumn 1991. Locals are now preparing for an expected Croat onslaught to try to regain control there. There are now almost no Croats left in the region, which has been devastated by the Serbs. The Croat offensive elsewhere has already led to an influx of Serbian refugees.
