Building on a solid foundation

Article Abstract:

There has been extensive criticism of the standard of foundation courses in science and engineering recently. However, universities state that such courses are simply a response to the government's policy of increasing the number of students taking degrees in science-related subjects. These courses can also be attractive to applicants who have an engineering background but not the formal qualifications required to begin a full degree course. Failure rates can be high, but by the time of the final degree examinations, standards are almost the same as for students on a traditional degree course.

Hypermarkets in cyberspace

Article Abstract:

There are now more than 100 Internet service providers (ISPs) in the UK, with the market for a basic, dial-up connection having become extremely competitive. The large telecommunications companies have begun to take the Internet very seriously, and are now beginning to present a threat to smaller, specialist ISPs. Furthermore, new players are entering the market. These include supermarket chain Tesco, which has launched its own Internet service, mainly as a means of promoting electronic shopping.
