Taking strides

Article Abstract:

Rosalind in 'As you like it' is Shakespeare's best female part, a difficult character to play. She changes her image as the play develops: dressing as a man gives her exhilarating freedom not appreciated by twentieth century dressers and she changes from despair to being in love, and from being a private person into running the Forest of Arden single-handed. Three new productions are staged in summer 1992, at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford, the Greenwich Theatre, London and Regent's Park Open Air Theatre. Samantha Bond, Jemma Redgrave and Cathryn Harrison play Rosalind. Emma Croft plays her in a new film.

Cutting parts down to size

Article Abstract:

Dennis Potter's play 'Blue Remembered Hills', running at Bristol Old Vic in May 1992, is about children but written to be performed by adults. This is unsettling for the audience and challenging for the performers to be convincing. Children rarely use chairs and have floor contact; they run about a lot but rarely bump into each other; they are rarely still and use gestures like holding their trouser bottoms. It is important the actors lose adult mannerisms, body language and facial expressions.

The art of persuasion

Article Abstract:

Artistic director of the Young Vic theatre David Thacker resigned in 1993 after nine years. He directed rehearsals in a similar way to a scientific experiment conducted in a school classroom. He expected actors to participate in deciding the best approach. His choice of plays, including many American playwrights, made the theatre's reputation. He leaves the theatre financially secure and in good repair.
