Bosnia's minders look in vain for the exit

Article Abstract:

It was originally envisaged that the international community would begin to gradually withdraw from Bosnia in summer 1998. However, Nato and the US Defense Department acknowledge that this will not now be possible. Elections were intended to give Bosnia political independence, but the electoral process has been so complicated that Bosnia has in fact become more dependent on the outside world, rather than less. Key issues will not be resolved if the international community remains in Bosnia, but fighting may break out again if it withdraws.

Bosnia's elections set to shake the Balkans

Article Abstract:

The elections which are to take place shortly in Bosnia will have considerable significance for the Balkan region as a whole. This is mainly because it will be possible for voters to vote in their absence in the places where they lived before the outbreak of war in 1991. This also allows parties to put up candidates in places where it is too dangerous for them to actually campaign. This may mean, for example, that a town which is now entirely Serb could find itself with a Muslim town council.

Bosnia ballots with bullets on its mind

Article Abstract:

The elections currently being held in Bosnia are taking place against a background of continued severe ethnic tension. There have been clashes between Muslims and Croats, particularly in central Bosnia, and individuals have been the target of extreme violence. However, leaders of the two sides are aware that it is vital to reach a settlement if there is to be any chance of the situation improving and political stability being achieved.
