Britain begins to reverse the brain-drain

Article Abstract:

Anthony Giddens, director of the London School of Economics and a close associate of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, has played a key role in attracting leading professors from the US and the rest of Europe to the institution. He believes that UK universities still cannot compete with the very attractive offers being made to leading academics by their counterparts in the US, but feels that the quality of intellectual community in the UK is reviving. Top academics are being attracted by the positive image of London, England, but universities are still struggling to retain them.

The way to your place

Article Abstract:

Would-be students who do not hold an offer from a university can apply for entry through the United Kingdom clearing system, run by UCAS. Would-be students should be available rather than going on holiday, and they are more likely to secure a place if they are active in contacting universities. There were more than 40,000 applicants through the clearing scheme oin 1996 with vacancies in more than 17,000 courses. Vacancies are easier to find in some subjects, and less available in subjectslike medicine for which demand is high.
