Fischer brushes aside allegations of a violent past

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has sought to distance himself from violent incidents in which he was involved in the 1970s. He has stated that he did physically attack policemen, but only after extreme provocation.

Aid agency Shelter Now International has seen the release of eight of its workers who were arrested in Kabul, Afghanistan, in Aug 2001. They were charged with spreading Christianity among Afghan Muslims.

Red tape puts the squeeze on life in the city

Article Abstract:

There are extremely high levels of regulation in Berlin, Germany. This is one reason why the city's economy remains weak and why it has proved very hard to attract outside investment. Excessive bureaucracy is having a particularly negative impact on the construction sector, with 40% of construction workers being unemployed. Around 350 construction companies fail each quarter, and construction has become an extremely risky activity.
