By the seaside, beside the point

Article Abstract:

The Tate St Ives art gallery was generally welcomed positively when it opened in Jun 1993. However, it is now becoming clear that the gallery has a number of drawbacks. It offers almost no view of the seascapes which inspired the work of local artists exhibited in the gallery, and its layout is cumbersome and confusing. Most importantly, it is failing in its self-defined aim of presenting changing displays of 20th century art relating to Cornwall, as well as in its wider task of making modern art more accessible to ordinary people.

Let the buyer beware

Article Abstract:

The new Glasgow Museum of Modern Art has failed to fulfill its potential. It is in a very favourable location and has been given a reasonable budget, but really does no more than reflect the personal tastes of its director, Julian Spalding. The works are not displayed to their best advantage, and it appears that all works of art are seen simply as mass-produced images. However, there are a few high quality works from artists such as John Byrne and Alison Watt.

Hands-on experience

Article Abstract:

Winsor and Newton have produced an innovative art product, oil paint in a stick, called Oilbar. Although brushstrokes are important, individual methods of application abound and using oil paint in a stick is an alternative option. Previously this produced too waxy or too dry paint, but Oilbar has a 'buttery' consistency. Suzanne Starr, a Baltimore artist invented it to enable drawing with paint.
